    The Neolithic Origins of Cities: A More Complex Narrative<\/span><\/span><\/h5><\/div>

    Pirenne\u2019s thesis challenges the notion that <\/span>barbarian invasions destroyed Roman civilization<\/span><\/span>, instead arguing that <\/span>economic shifts, integration or assimilation and new trade routes\u2014particularly with the rise of Islam\u2014reshaped the Mediterranean world<\/span><\/span>.     His <\/span>focus on architectural limitations due to poor diets<\/span><\/span> is a <\/span>deterministic and simplistic view<\/span><\/span> of how cultural and technological advancements happen. Yes, agricultural innovations like <\/span>crop rotation and the steel plow<\/span><\/span> enabled larger stone buildings, but <\/span>they were not the only factors driving architectural evolution<\/span><\/span>\u2014ideological, religious, and economic motivations played just as crucial a role.<\/span><\/div><\/div>

    Misusing Marc Bloch: What He Accidentally Taught Me<\/span><\/span><\/h5><\/div>
    Rahm\u2019s approach to <\/span>historical evidence<\/span><\/span> is also problematic in how he <\/span>selectively quotes or misuses historians to serve his own argument<\/span><\/span>.     The quote suggests that <\/span>lords were not simply born into power, but that their dominance was solidified through control over strategic fortified sites<\/span><\/span>. This could have been an interesting moment in Rahm\u2019s book\u2014a chance to explore how <\/span>built form influences governance<\/span><\/span>\u2014but instead, he <\/span>cherry-picks<\/b> the quote and moves on without expanding on its significance<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/div><\/div>

    Had Rahm genuinely engaged with Bloch\u2019s ideas, he could have tied them into <\/span>his broader argument about climate and power<\/span><\/span>, showing how <\/span>architecture serves not only as environmental protection but also as a tool for structuring political and social systems<\/span><\/span>. Instead, his <\/b><\/span>fast-forward approach to history<\/span><\/span> leaves <\/span>no room for nuance, depth, or critical engagement with the sources he cites<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/b><\/div><\/div>

    The Question of Sanitation, Artificial Climatization, and Oversimplification<\/span><\/span><\/h5><\/div>
    Rahm highlights sanitation as a fundamental driver of urban development, but he <\/span>oversimplifies the complexity of urban transformation<\/span><\/span> by reducing it to a singular necessity. A clear example of this is <\/span>his critique of the Haussmannian reconstruction of Paris<\/span><\/span>, where he challenges the popular view that Haussmann\u2019s redesign was primarily about state control and social engineering.     The reality is that <\/span>both perspectives hold validity<\/span><\/span><\/b>, but Rahm\u2019s framing forces an overly deterministic conclusion that disregards the multifaceted nature of urban planning.<\/span><\/div><\/div>

    Similarly, Rahm\u2019s critique of <\/span>artificial climatization<\/span><\/span>\u2014a practice deeply embedded in modern architecture\u2014deserves attention, particularly given its role in accelerating climate change. However, rather than engaging in a nuanced discussion about <\/span>how modern architecture can reconcile climate control with sustainable design<\/span><\/span>, Rahm <\/b><\/span>reduces the issue to an ideological divide<\/span><\/span> between material reality and cultural abstraction.<\/span><\/b><\/div><\/div>
