Markets are more than just places of commerce<\/h5>
Markets have always been <\/span>at the heart of communities\u2014places where economic, social, and cultural exchanges converge.<\/b><\/div>
\u00a0<\/span><\/div><\/div>
Despite the rise of globalized commerce and online retail, physical markets remain vital<\/b>, particularly in informal economies where they provide affordable space for traders and access to essential goods for residents.<\/span><\/div><\/div>
\u00a0<\/span><\/div><\/div>
In many cities, informal trading is not just a necessity but a dominant economic force.<\/b> In Cape Town, for instance, informal trade contributes significantly to employment, yet it operates under precarious conditions lacking basic infrastructure, municipal support, and protection from gentrification.<\/b> Women in South Africa, who form the majority of informal traders, are especially vulnerable.<\/b><\/span><\/div><\/div>

This project explores <\/span>an architectural typology for informal markets<\/b><\/span><\/span>, focusing on Delft South, Cape Town. The aim was not just to propose a market but to investigate how architecture through <\/b><\/span>long-span structures like vaults <\/b><\/span><\/span>can create dignified, efficient, and adaptable spaces for informal trade.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/div><\/div>

Vaulted Structures: Efficiency, Form, and Atmosphere<\/span><\/h5>
Vaults have long been used in architecture for their efficiency, material economy, and spatial fluidity<\/b><\/span>. By standing purely through compressive forces<\/span>, they require minimal material while offering <\/b>large-span coverage<\/b><\/span>, making them ideal for open public spaces<\/b> like markets. Their curved forms<\/span> not only provide structural integrity but also create an inviting atmosphere<\/span>, offering natural shading, ventilation, and a sense of enclosure without restricting movement.<\/b><\/span><\/div><\/div>

In contrast to conventional beam-and-pillar<\/span> structures, vaulted systems minimize deflection and reduce the need for excessive reinforcement. The thin-tile vaulting technique<\/span>, pioneered in Catalonia, Spain<\/span>, and later refined by <\/b>Eladio Dieste in Uruguay<\/b><\/span>, exemplifies this approach\u2014using lightweight bricks that interlock without heavy formwork, resulting in structures that are both economical and expressive<\/span>.<\/span><\/div><\/div>

This method has historically been used where resources were scarce, from Antoni Gaud\u00ed\u2019s Catalan vaults<\/span> to the Cuban National Schools of Arts<\/span>, built during the U.S. trade embargo. Inspired by these precedents, my project explores the potential of vaulted structures in informal market spaces<\/span>, where affordability, adaptability, and spatial identity are crucial.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

To test the feasibility of the vaulted design, I built three 1:20 scale models and 3D printed structures<\/span>. Using wire mesh and layered brick tiles, these models demonstrate structural integrity, material economy, and form-finding principles<\/b><\/span>. Beyond South Africa: A Universal Need for Inclusive Market Spaces.<\/h5>
While this research is rooted in <\/span>Cape Town\u2019s informal economy<\/span><\/span>, the challenges it addresses\u2014<\/span>lack of infrastructure, economic exclusion, and the precarity of informal trade<\/span><\/span>\u2014are global. Informal markets exist <\/span>everywhere<\/span><\/span>, from Latin America to Southeast Asia, but in contexts where <\/span>the wealth gap is extreme, like South Africa<\/span><\/span>, these contradictions are most stark.<\/span><\/div><\/div>
Here, the absence of <\/span>public investment in market infrastructure<\/span><\/span> reveals a deeper issue: a system that prioritizes large-scale commerce while disregarding <\/span>the economic backbone of many communities<\/span><\/span>. In settings of <\/span>extreme inequality<\/span><\/span>, the need for <\/span>alternative typologies\u2014markets that dignify, protect, and empower not only traders but also communities\u2014becomes even more urgent.<\/span><\/span><\/div><\/div>

By examining this reality in South Africa, we uncover broader lessons: <\/span>how architecture can mediate economic disparity, how design can serve public interest, and how markets can function as both economic engines and social infrastructure.<\/span><\/span> These principles are applicable <\/span>anywhere<\/span><\/span>\u2014not just in informal economies but also in cities where the push for privatization threatens local commerce. <\/span><\/div><\/div>
